SEVEN PUPILS at St Catherine’s C of E Primary School, Heathfield, have been learning how to avoid trouble on the roads this winter. With months of long nights ahead they staged a be safe, be seen day. With everyone wearing bright and reflective clothing, the older children helped those from the reception and nursery classes to learn the Green Cross Code. The playground was turned into a mock road scene for the event to make sure that putting the new-found knowledge into practice was as safe as possible.

CHAMPION: Jamie Speight, complete with International Masters light-welterweight belt, takes the applause of the crowd. Despite some ‘out of order tactics’ used by his opponent, Kingsteignton’s Jamie managed to keep his focus to lift the International Masters light-welter- weight title at the Riviera Centre. Roared on by what he describes as his ‘amazing’ fans, Speight overcame the plucky Ibrar Riyaz on points after ten barnstorming rounds at the Torquay venue. He showed just what a true champion he is on the way to doing so – refusing to be rattled when Riyaz stirred things up.
