The cost of a steel frame represents approximately 10% of a buildings total construction cost

Please give an overview on the structural steel fabrica- tion business in India, and globally? Steelmaking and steel fab-

rication businesses are com- pletely different in operation but are complimentary to each other in respect of the supply of steel sections. The combi- nation of JSW’s steelmaking business combined with JSW Severfield’s fabrication capa- bility is therefore the ideal partnership. Basically the fin- ished goods of the steel mills are raw material for JSSL. Percentage of commercial

structures built in steel in various global locations is as follows:

Concrete has, in the past, been the automatic choice for clients because of the lack of steel design and organized fabricators, resource within the country. But with JSSL now being operational we will see a dramatic move towards steel within India. What has been the growth from the past five years? Is this segment expected to grow at a scorching pace? Concept for JSSL has been founded on the solid econom- ic growth envisaged for the Indian economy. JSSL would strive to contribute its world class structural fabrication expertise for the expanding needs of the nation, thereby continue to expand its base as well. The segment will see many forms and levels of growth both horizontally and vertically, manifolds.

Please enumerate the demand drivers.  Chronic shortage of skilled civil workers

 Inconsistency in the qual- ity of work thus to cater to demand for standardiza-

Japan mented quickly

 Congested city sites  Sustainability  Shortage of space for hous- ing of labor/storage

 Increasing awareness of health and safety on site

 Delays associated with site and weather conditions

 Less delays in project exe- cution and programmes maintained

 Flexible buildings due to column free space These are some of the key highlight demand drivers. However India has a demand and catch up to do with the west as far as infrastructure goes, and JSSL and offsite steel fabrication will directly and indirectly feed to that neces- sity

What are the challenges con- fronting a structural steel fabricator? The Indian economy escaped the global contagion primarily because the Indian banking sector was not exposed to the risky assets, similar to those financed in the advanced economies. This has ensured

India

that economic growth contin- ues upward, which helps not only a steel fabricator but any core industry or service with- in the country. JSSL does not see any threats to its business particularly with the buoyant power industry and metro/ building construction sec- tor, now indicating that they have at least a decade of work in front of them. The Indian market will need more highly skilled fabricators, and their entry into the market will be a very positive move rather than a negative one, which will see business expand. There is a lot of opportunity and very little threat in the short to medium turn, and in the long term have an established player, giving us a strategic advantage.

Are these structures consid- ered to be to costly to build on a large scale in India? What is the market sentiment and what is your view on this? The cost of a steel frame

represents approximately 10% of a buildings total construc- tion cost. While steel prices have risen considerably over the past twelve months the impact on the overall con- struction cost has been extremely small i.e. 1% - 2%. It should also be noted that a concrete frame incorporates a 30% steel element which will also have experienced a sig- nificant increase. The steel framed solution also offers a much-reduced program that can be utilized to generate funds through early of occupation of the build- ing. Furthermore most of the buildings have a value engi- neered solution, which pro- vides a more let able floor area within the same space, due to better design and value engi- neering that JSSL provides, this provides an immense costs gain in terms for carpet area.
