STUDY TEAMS At Averett, both students and faculty members are acknowledged as major learning resources. Individuals learn through participation in the process of inquiry and teamwork. Study teams are an integral part of the Averett educational model. Teams are composed of three to five students who meet weekly outside of class in either a face-to-face or technology- mediated environment. Study teams function as project teams through which students learn more efficient problem-solving skills from the professional expertise of their peers. The team-based format is one of the strengths of the GPS programs, providing increased learning as well as a social support network. In addition, employers consistently indicate the importance of functioning in teams in the workplace. Averett fosters a learning environment that reinforces the skills that employers want and demand – working as part of a team. Please note that the Master of Education program does not require study teams.
RECOGNIZED EXCELLENCE Students at Averett benefit from the programs and practices that have earned Averett recognition as a Top Regional College in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2011” and as a Military Friendly School in GI Jobs’ “Guide to Military Friendly Schools.”
FACULTY MEMBERS
The philosophy of the GPS program includes instruction by scholared practitioners of the disciplines they are teaching. Faculty members must also meet the academic criteria set forth by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty members serve as facilitators of interactive learning activities such as discussions, simulations and case analyses as well as individual and team projects.
To ensure the highest academic quality, all curriculums have been written by Averett faculty members who are academically qualified and accomplished in their disciplines. Master-level courses are taught by faculty who hold doctoral or terminal degrees and have a minimum of 18 graduate hours in their disciplines.
