Sushi
‘Itadakimasu!!’ is the hearty exclamation Japanese utter before tucking into their meal. It literally means ‘I gratefully receive’. And gratefully receive they do. Whilst most of us are familiar with sushi – vinegar rice with vegetables or raw fish – it is only the beginning of a mouth-watering assortment of Japanese cuisine. Nothing quite surpasses the atmosphere, nor the authentic taste, of slurping down a steaming bowl of Japanese noodle soup, ‘ramen’, side by side with a row of locals.
Apart from delicate sushi or sumptuous sashimi (strips of raw fish), there is tempura – lightly battered vegetables and seafood, or okonomiyaki – Japan’s version of a savoury pancake. Honey glazed grilled yakitori chicken and Korean style yakiniku bbq will cater to the meat lovers among you.
For something essentially Japanese, distinct kaiseki style dinners are the ultimate in Japanese fine dining. Fresh Japanese flavours are spread over 6 to 10 courses, the meal sometimes lasting 2 hours long. Food is painstakingly prepared and presented as works of art on a canvas of beautiful Japanese tableware. Kaiseki dinners are often set amongst the most traditional and atmospheric surroundings, such as a temple or ryokan.
