Tour description: Whilst the usual staples of Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Hakone are still in place, this tour is designed to show you the wealth of Japan’s artistic culture. Transport yourself back in time in Takayama and Shirakawago and then pursue serenity at Kanazawa’s esteemed gardens. This tour is a chance to sample a hidden side of Japan, one that not many visitors may get to see.


Special features: After taking your express bullet train to Takayama, you will be taken on a tour around this quaint Japanese town along the rustic Kami Sannomachi streets where traditional wooden Japanese housing still remains. The Yatai Kaikan Hall displays examples of Takayama’s famous festival floats, each colourfully decorated and lovingly preserved. The Kusakabe Folkcraft Museum will impress you with intricate carvings and insights into the local culture, which is unique even in Japan.


After stocking up on souvenirs at Takayama’s famous open air market, onto charming Shirakawago village via Lake Miboro and Shokawa River. Takayama is home to the last examples of UNESCO Gassho-zukuri ‘hands in prayer’ architecture. Another UNESCO site is Gokayama, where you can get stuck in with making Gokayama Washi, traditional Japanese paper.


Before finishing your journey in Kyoto, more arts and crafts await you at Kanazawa, not least one of the most splendid Japanese gardens in the world, Kenroku-en.


The Kutaniyaki Pottery Kiln makes for a pleasant trip with a chance to see how genuine Japanese lacquer is applied. Finally, a visit to Nagamachi Samurai House leaves a deep impression of how the proud Samurai once lived.
