OPTIONS JANUARY/APRIL 2011 New Year Pilates Course

GILLY GREEN has been a fitness consultant for 25 years and has taught Pilates in the south Devon area for the past 11 years. Her company G.H. FITNESS runs courses for various abilities from beginner to advanced; classes for people with bad backs, and 'Power Pilates' for athletes who want to maintain their bodies for more vigorous pursuits.

• Pilates one leg stretch

Gilly says ‘learning Pilates is a progressive journey as you constantly learn and discover new things about your body every week. It is crucial to find a well qualified and experienced Pilates instructor to teach you particularly when you-start. Recent- research has

highlighted that there is a big difference between “core strength” and “core stability” of the body, so you can be very strong and athletic but have Iittle “core stability”, and this usually results in back ache, shoulder problems, hip niggles and general muscle imbalances.

• Pilates one leg pull supine

By following a regular Pilates exercise programme people can rectify this and make a huge difference to their wellbeing.

Pilates will also de- stress the mind, release overworked muscles, and is like a massage inside and out, so if you haven't tried it yet ring for an information pack. We look forward to hearing from you!’

• Pilates roll down

7 “Enjoying excellence” comes true!

ST MARGARET’S ‘strap-line’ of ‘enjoying excellence’ was fully endorsed by its recent Inspection. To achieve the judgement ‘Excellent’ each area had to meet very strict criteria – and the word is used several times in St Margaret’s School’s very complimentary report.

The Inspection team judged that ‘pupils are well educated in line with the school’s aim to encourage

excellence’ and that they are

‘conspicuously successful’ in its ‘excellent programme of extra-curricular activities’.

The curriculum ‘amply fulfils the school’s aim to provide a challenging and inspiring education’, with ‘an excellent PCCE programme’ and with teaching that ‘at its best blends

excellent planning, of stimulating tasks that excite and extend pupils’.

The report

commented, ‘Teachers give freely of their time to help pupils’ and ‘Excellent personal development of the pupils is a significant strength . . . pupils show excellent social development and strong self-confidence . . . older pupils act as excellent role models for younger ones’.

The Headmistress, Mrs Sheila Cooper, explained that, “St Margaret’s has always felt that its pupils achieve extraordinary amounts and leave very well prepared for life beyond the school gates. The transformation during their years at St Margaret’s is always clear at Prize-Giving.”

The inspection’s analysis of exam results confirms this transformation. St Margaret’s results ‘reach the (national) level for maintained selective schools’, a tremendous achievement. Each individual makes ‘particularly good progress relative to pupils of similar ability’ – St Margaret’s value-added is extremely high.

The report judges

‘arrangements for pastoral care are excellent and they support and

significantly enhance the pupils’ whole school experience, development and progress.’ Governance, leadership and management ‘have many appropriate strengths’ and St Margaret’s maintains ‘excellent links with parents’.

Mrs Cooper said,

“We were thrilled with such a glowing report. The Inspection team recognised all the many excellences of the school – in its pupils and its staff.

I was so proud of them all and delighted to congratulate everyone in Assembly.”

She went on,

“Especially exciting for us, was the recognition of the strength of our community, after only opening our new Nursery and Pre-Prep two years ago. All the new boys and Girls are totally immersed in school life”.
