NEWS FROM THE ABU REGION Automatic Detection of Unpleasant Scenes

Research is underway on haptic technology in an attempt to create televisions that can transmit the sensation of touching a displayed object. Through the control of high-precision haptic devices, we have achieved a way of touching a virtual object with the palm and fingers.

Viewers of large-screen TVs may feel uncomfortable viewing certain scenes involving shaky camera shots and flickering patterns. This booth displayed STRL’s ongoing research into technologies which can automatically detect scenes that are likely to generate unpleasant sensations. These technologies are intended for the editing stage of programme production.

NEW PLATFORM FOR MEDIA PRIMA, RTM CONTENT

As part of its expansion strategy into the digital media space, Media Prima Berhad (TV3), has signed an MOU with YTL Communications. Under the agreement, YTL will work towards hosting Media Prima’s existing quality local content on its next generation TV service, thus making Malaysian content available to the region. A similar agreement was also signed between YTL and RTM for its channels and content to be carried on the new TV service. The partners will also undertake to jointly create new productions for local and regional broadcast.

Sign language is one means of communication for hearing- impaired people. Words and sentences in sign language are mainly represented by hand gestures. To expand Japanese Sign Language (JSL) broadcasting services, STRL is conducting basic research on technologies that will translate spoken-Japanese into JSL and automatically generate CG videos of JSL. The Japanese-JSL dictionary is used in translating text into JSL and a high quality, natural JSL CG video were on display.

The system translates Japanese Sign Language into Japanese text and vice versa. In this system, hand shapes and positions are provided by hand-based input in the form of time series. Then, hand gestures are recognized and translated into Japanese sentences using continuous DP (dynamic programming) matching. Japanese text is translated into sign language by generating three-dimensional computer- graphic animation of sign language gestures.

Haptic Technology for Representing 3-D Objects

YTL’s next generation TV service is potentially an advanced, digital TV service that will seamlessly integrate traditional television and Internet content, while automatically recommending, recording and organising the customer’s favorite shows.

Based on the leading-edge 4G mobile Internet architecture, YTL’s service will effectively give users mobile broadband, mobile voice, home TV and mobile TV, all in one account. (www.mediaprima.com.my)
