Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) is the national industry body for commercial radio in Australia with over 261 FM, AM and DAB+ station members nationwide representing 99% of the commercial radio licensees on air.
The core responsibility of CRA is to provide outstanding service for its members. The industry body is responsible for lobbying Federal and State Governments on issues such as media legislation, industry regulation and advertising codes which affect the radio industry.
To ensure ongoing expertise within the industry, CRA is committed to developing professional resources. Together with educational and tertiary partners, CRA supports a range of courses developed by the industry for the industry. Members are provided with regular updates on all employee relations issues that impact the industry, including various industrial awards and Fair Work Australia decisions.
The negotiation of audience survey contracts is another key role of the industry body. Australia has a consistent and reliable ratings system that gives confidence to the advertising sector. Industry wide copyright agreements with composer and music industry organisations and submissions to the regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on Commercial Radio Advertising, Compliance and Disclosure Standards and Codes of Practice are all handled by CRA.
To raise the profile of the radio industry and acknowledge the excellence in Australian radio, each year CRA runs the annual National Commercial Radio Conference and the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). The ACRAs are a highlight of the radio industry’s
calendar and attract radio personalities from around Australia, feature entertainment and up to a 1,000 guests attend. The awards include 33 categories and cover all areas of radio broadcasting.
CRA is also well known in the region and globally for the highly successful rollout of DAB+ digital radio services in the five state metropolitan capitals of Australia. CRA is now sharing information and expertise throughout the region hosting a number of digital radio study tours for ABU members as well as publishing factsheets to assist broadcasters plan and implement DAB+ trials and permanent services.
