TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MEETING
Technical Committee Meeting in Tokyo: Focus on Digital Implementation, Hybrid Platforms, 3DTV
The annual Technical Committee (TC) meeting this year was held in Tokyo, Japan from the 15 – 17 October 2010. The meeting was hosted by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). The meeting commenced at the NHK Broadcasting Centre with a welcoming address by Dr Kazuyoshi Shogen, Chairman of the Committee. In his opening remarks Dr Shogen thanked NHK for hosting the meetings and highlighted the many developments and issues broadcasters and industry are facing at the moment. Mr Kenji Nagai, Executive Director-General of Engineering at NHK welcomed the delegates to Tokyo and NHK on behalf of the host. The ABU Vice-President, Mr Manuel Goncalves, TDM-Macau, said that broadcasters must reinvent themselves to retain relevance in the current environment.
TC attracted a large participation
Prizes were also announced at the meeting. Dr Abdolali Aliaskary of IRIB-Iran and Mr Zhang Jianping of RTPRC- China were the winners of the Excellence Awards. The three Technical Review Prizes were won by articles by staff from members NHK-Japan, RNZ-New Zealand and RTM-Malaysia.
Members show keen interest
In his address, Mr Javad Mottaghi, ABU Secretary-General highlighted some of the major activities of the Technical Department and identified some upcoming initiatives. He invited members to take ownership of the ABU and join in the decision making process, adding that the ABU is keen to enhance services to all members, particularly to the larger broadcasters.
The three days of meetings addressed several industry issues pertaining to members, big and small. The meetings included invited presentations on hot topics, a CTO Forum, technical workshops, reports on technical studies and forums, a special topic session, a tour of NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories, awards announcements and the election of TC office bearers for the next two year term.
The TC, at this year’s sitting, endorsed three key decisions and two recommendations reached at the meetings. As a new initiative the meetings included a CTO Forum session which saw technology chiefs of 10 members addressing key issues and their solutions.

The Distinguished Service Award was conferred on Mr Kenji Nagai, Executive Director-General of Engineering at NHK, recognising his contributions in transition to DTTB services, successful collaboration with Telcos on One-Seg mobile receivers and his pioneering role in development of satellite broadcasting.
An interactive session Meeting Highlights
The ABU Digital Radio and Developing Broadcasters’ Forums completed their annual meetings, identifying the main issues that the Forums need to address in the next year. Asaad Bagharib, MediaCorp-Singapore and Ms Lim Soh Kwang, RTB-Brunei, respectively presided over the meetings.
