Muth Family Learning Center

Matthew 25:40 The king will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me (Jesus). ‘

As we embrace a new year, and renewed hope as well as consciousness, keep in mind the above scriptural quote. The Learning Center’s purpose is to assist students in their quest for academic and thus personal success. The philosophy of Universal Design, which promotes access structures, such as ramps and closed captioning (etc.), can apply to education as well. Methods and technology, to assist those with mobility or sensory challenges, also help and support all of us. Ramps are nice for those of us who push strollers or have injuries/health issues as well as those who are wheelchair bound.

Closed captioning can not only assist the deaf and hard of hearing, but also those of us who benefit from using multiple senses to learn. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) means that stigmas related to learning differences are passé. Larger fonts and generous spacing for test construction allow all students an ease of information flow. Testing time should be reasonable but less about the speed of testing and more about getting to the accuracy of response. Albert Einstein believed in simplicity and flexibility in terms of thinking about and understanding our vast universe.

A science teacher uses hand motions to explain to her class the movements of continental plates. She observes that her students use these movements when testing to help with definitions and recall. A history teacher constructs tests with short clear directions and short phrase “bullets” for answer choices. As a result, her students look forward to taking her tests because they understand what she is asking. A math teacher uses one side only for test sheets and boxed in spaces for answers because he notes that many students skip the backside of the tests and put answers to their work in random places. When we want to include all students in chances to be successful in school, we are, as Matthew’s scripture affirms, doing God’s work.
