13 Days Bird Watching Itinerary Changnyeong

Gangwha Island (1 night), Incheon (1 night), Seosan (2 nights), Jeju (2 nights), Haenam (2 nights), Changwon (1 night), Gyeoongju (1 night), Seoul (1 night), Seoul vicinity (1 night)

Arrive at Incheon Airport and transfer to your hotel on Ganghwa Island for an overnight stay. Full day bird watching at Ganghwa. Overnight in Incheon.


Morning drive along the Imjin River (near to the DMZ area), towards Imjingak, where you will have the opportunity to see some geese, including the Greater White-fronted and Tundra Bean as well as raptors that, with luck should include the Black Vulture and the White-tailed Eagle. In the afternoon visit the Songdo tidal-flat in Incheon, go in search for Saunders’s and Relict Gulls.


Day 4 Day 5


- Enjoy a full day around Seosan, visit the lake and rice paddies in search of the Oriental White Stork and the Steller’s Sea Eagle. Stay two nights in Seosan.


Drive to Cheonsu Bay, situated north of one of Korea’s and East Asia’s best birding areas. In the afternoon drive to Geum River, where you should see Bikal Teal, Swan Geese, Saunders’s Gulls and, with luck, the distinctive eastern form of Oystercatcher in the estuary. In the evening fly to Jeju, where you will stay for the next two nights.


Day 6


Full day on Jeju Island, explore the forest on the southern slopes of Mt. Halla, South Korea’s highest peak. Here you will search for the Red-flanked Bluetail, the Pale and White Thrushes, the Japanese White-eye and the Japanese Bush Warbler. In the afternoon arrive at Sungsanpo in the south-eastern corner of the island. Here you should be able to find some Black-faced Spoonbills, one of the world’s rarest birds, roosting on the black lava islands.

Morning visit to Gwanum Temple. Fly to Muan and continue to Haenam, go in search of a great variety of raptors, the Japanese Quail and the Baikal Teal. Overnight in Haenam.


Today you will go in search of the Long-billed Plover and possibly the Japanese Wagtail. At Suncheon Bay, the highlight will be to see South Korea’s only wintering flock of Hooded Crane, large numbers of Saunder’s Gulls, and a variety of other water birds. Overnight in Changwon.


Drive to the Junam and Tongpan reservoirs and look out for the elusive Baer’s Pochard, Falcated Ducks and large numbers of swans. Overnight in Pohang.


Spend the day on the Kuryongpo Peninsula. Overnight in Gyeongju.


Tour of Gyeongju to include a visit to the Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto and the Bumun lake resort. Drive to Seoul, where you will stay two nights.


Visit the forest at Gwangnung, where you will hopefully see the White-backed and Japanese Pygmy Woodpeckers, as well as the Solitary Snipe and Brown Dipper.
