GEEK LOVE
The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons isn’t just another
face that got off the bus in Los Angeles with dreams of making it big as an actor. The Texas native acted in high school plays and at the University of Houston. He then moved to San Diego to attend grad school at the University of San Diego, where he was part of a program taught by the Old Globe Theatre. The actor credits the lessons learned while at USD for helping him be able to memorize and speak the extremely complicated dialogue of the character he portrays on television. In an interview with his hometown newspaper
Sheldon Quotes:
Sheldon: Why are you crying? Penny: Because I’m stupid! Sheldon: That’s no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad.
Penny: Sheldon, could I ask you a question? Sheldon: I would prefer that you not, but I wouldn’t go so far as to forbid it.
Sheldon: Under normal circumstances I’d say I told you so. But, as I have told so with such vehemence and frequency already the phrase has lost all meaning. Therefore, I will be replacing it with the phrase, I have informed you thusly.
Sheldon: So, this is engineering, huh? Engineering, where the noble semi-skilled laborers execute the vision of those who think and dream. Hello Oompa Loompas of science!
Sheldon: I find zombies dancing in choreographed synchronicity implausible. And also it’s really scary.
Parsons said, “I haven’t had any experiences with anyone like Sheldon in my life however, as an actor, my time spent doing graduate acting work at the University of San Diego has really come in handy. The USD program was strongly based in classical texts, like Shakespeare, and I find the challenge of figuring out how to say and play many of Sheldon’s lines very similar to the process I learned while in school with regards to breaking down one of those classical texts.” After graduating from USD, Parsons appeared in bit parts on shows such as Ed and Judging Amy, then got his big break when he auditioned for the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory’s pilot episode. Executive Producer Chuck Lorre was im- mediately impressed with Parsons’ performance and nerd history was made. The character of Sheldon Cooper has earned
Parsons many accolades. He was nominated for an Emmy in both 2008 and 2009, he was nominated for a Television Critics Association award and Teen Choice award in 2010 and that same year was again nominated, and won, a well deserved Emmy award. His Emmy win was also significant to Parsons’ personal life. That night, among the many people he thanked in his acceptance speech was the name of Todd Spiewak, Parsons’ boyfriend and soon to be fiancé. That night, after winning the Emmy, Parsons proposed to his long time partner. Parsons is contracted to continue to play Dr. Shel- don Cooper for three more seasons.
