COMMUNITIES SAFE Learn about the shared commitment by local public safety agencies in keeping the


diverse communities of San Diego safe in 2011 at “A Discussion on Hate Crimes & Public Safety in the New Year” on Monday, January 10. Even in the face of reduced resources and a challenging economy in San Diego, hear about how agencies collaborate to investigate and prosecute hate crime offenders and what you can do if you or some- one you know is the victim of a hate crime. This event is jointly presented by the San Diego LGBT Community Center, Office of San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria, San Diego Police Department, Office of San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and the San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition. A NEW YEAR CELEBRATION IMPERIAL COURT DE SAN DIEGO CORONATION:


‘A MILITARY AFFAIR’ The Imperial Court de San Diego (ICSD) presents Coronation 2011 “A Military


Affair,” with festivities honoring five LGBT veterans taking place throughout the weekend of January 21-23. It all kicks off with the crowning of Emperor and Empress of Rio Tijuana at The Tijuana Party on Friday, January 21, at Redwing Bar & Grill in North Park. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. with a $20 cover charge which includes a Mexican buffet to benefit Tijuana Aids Fund. That same night the Out of Town Show will take place at Numbers Nightclub in Hillcrest. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m. The $20 cover charge will benefit various ICSD charities. The main event of Coronation XXXIX: A Military Affair takes place Saturday, January 22, at The San Diego LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the coronation will commence promptly at 6:00 p.m. with the proceeds of the general admission tickets at $40—and VIP tickets $65—benefitting the ICSD charities. The royal events conclude Sunday morning with the Victory Brunch at Numbers Nightclub in Hillcrest. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. The $25 admission also benefits the various ICSD charities. Established in 2005 by the San Diego LGBT Community Leadership Council, the event is designed to provide San Diego community nonprofit organizations with an opportunity to showcase their organizations and recruit for their year-round volunteer opportunities. It is also designed to make gathering information about organizations easy and painless for the hundreds of community members who make New Year’s “resolutions” to volunteer. COMMUNITY MEMORIALS The community will pay tribute Saturday, January 15, to the life of longtime publisher of the Gay & Lesbian


Times, Michael G. Portantino, whose untimely death last month rocked people in communities he touched na- tionwide. Portantino inarguably dedicated his life in San Diego to the LGBT community, which he largely helped shape and publicize for nearly 25 years. With unwavering commitment and support to the San Diego LGBT com- munity, Portantino touched countless lives both personally and professionally. Friends, family, colleagues and community members are invited to honor Portantino’s life at formal services starting at 11:00 a.m. at St. Didacus Church, located at 4772 Felton Street.
