Historical Fiction Writing

- A Practical Guide and Tool-kit by Myfanwy Cook

After a hard day’s work, many of us enjoy escaping into another world by turning off the TV and settling down with a good book. What better way to escape the stress of the 21st Century than to be transported back in time to another age, not by a time- machine but through the imagination and skill of the author of a great historical novel?

As a reader, how often have you finished a book and thought “I wish I could have written that” ? Or even, “I could have done better than that” ? Well, everyone has a book inside them, or so it is said, and those who would like to realise that ambition will be pleased to know that there is a new book available to help them to do just that.

Historical Fiction Writing - A practical guide and tool-kit has been written in response to all the aspiring writers who have taken part in Myfanwy Cook’s workshops over the past 15 years and asked her to write a tool-kit for them. It has also been inspired by her role as a Features Editor for the Historical Novels Review Magazine (www.historicalnovelsociety.org).

“Historical Fiction Writing - A Practical Guide and Tool-kit” will be published in January 2011 with contributions from, Bernard Knight (Crowner John series of historical mysteries, former Home Office pathologist and Professor of forensic medicine) and tips from writers such as Jane Pollard, Sarah Johnson (USA), Karen Maitland, Frank Tallis, Barbara Cleverly, Andrew Taylor, Michael Jecks, Tania Crosse, Julian Stockwin, Nicola Thorne, Lilian Harry, Ann Parker, Tess Gerritsen, Margaret Duffy, Bethany Latham (Historical Novels Review, USA), E.V. Thompson, Tim Severin, Bernard Cornwell, Simon Dell, Andrew Thompson, Ann Pulsford, prize-winning short fiction writer Myfanwy Cook (Historical Novels Review) and other historical novelists.
