NEWS FROM TAVISTOCK PEACE ACTION GROUP

Ploughshares and supported by CND, which gained coverage on local TV news. This highlighted the cost of Trident replacement (over £76 billion) and the risk of radioactive pollution. A timely new book by a former naval commander, Robert Green, entitled “Security Without Nuclear Deterrence,” lists the arguments against nuclear weapons and offers alternative and credible defence strategies. The group was represented at the recent Uniting for Peace conference in the House of Lords, exploring the peace movement’s role in this era of coalition government. It was a thought-provoking event with excellent speakers. Uniting for Peace incorporates Action for UN Renewal and the World Disarmament Campaign. Among the speakers, Dan Plesch, Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS, said that the UK is the least threatened it has ever been and does not need the current level of military spending. He also said that NATO should consider the removal of its nuclear weapons from Europe. Rachel Julian talked about civilian peace

keeping. It is sustainable and inexpensive and its effectiveness has been shown. In 25 years there have been no attacks on workers from the International Peace Brigade or on those they have protected. The peace keepers live and work in local communities. The importance of teaching conflict resolution in schools was emphasised by Ms Julian. It seems the UN has only a small budget – less than that for the Olympics! More resources are needed, especially for conflict prevention. It is thought that nations which are now growing in power, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, need more influence in the UN or they will “bypass” it. We hope to arrange a meeting about

Palestine early in 2011 and to support the work of Medical Aid for Palestinians Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4th

January at 7-30pm in the Friends’ Meeting House, Bedford Car Park, Tavistock. We welcome all who would like to join us. For more information about TPAG please phone 01822 615960 or see our new website.
