The Story So Far “JUJITSU is a self-defence martial art which was developed in Japan over 2000 years ago. Jujitsu, having one of the largest syllabi in the martial arts, helps the practitioners, especially the young ones, improve their learning, concentration and discipline. Jujitsu also promotes coordination, fitness and confidence and it’s just plain FUN to do. “That’s why I have been practising jujitsu for 22 years!” said Umberto Bergonzini, instructor at the Tavistock Club.

Umberto also added: “I still love to train and learn new things and constantly improve myself and I do so regularly although most of my time now is dedicated to teaching. About 9 or so years ago I felt it was the right time to make the step into teaching and I decided to open a club in Tavistock. After spending a few months looking for a suitable venue a space became available at Tavistock College. The 14th May 2002 saw Jujitsu Tavistock opening its doors. I didn’t know what to expect and if anyone would have turned up.

I

remember feeling nervous, excited and also worried. I definitely breathed a sigh of relief when I turned up and there were already 9 people waiting to try jujitsu.”

Since then the club has moved to the Scout Hut in Pixon lane and has gone from strength to strength.

More classes were introduced to cater for various age groups, one off self-defence courses have

been run for women only, for the youngsters at the Youth Café and also the year 13 students at Tavistock College as part of the independent living initiative. The club also organises the annual “open” jujitsu workshop with martial artists attending from all over the South West.

Umberto concluded by saying

“It’s been a very long but enjoyable and worthwhile journey. Seeing people progress and eventually achieving the coveted black belt has been very rewarding. The club now sports 2 first degree black belts and one second degree black belt. This has made it possible to open classes in Launceston and Tamerton Foliot in Plymouth giving more people the opportunity to try this fantastic martial art.”

Anyone interested in trying jujitsu can contact Umberto on 07866 720361 or come to one of the classes. Beginners are always welcome. More information and exact location and time of classes can be obtained by visiting the website www.jujitsu.uk.com
