Keep Fit & Active with Morris Dancing
NEW YEAR - same old keep- fit and dance classes? Looking for something different? Why not try Morris dancing? Lodestone Border Morris are running a series of free classes at the Kings Centre in Pixon Lane on Thursday evenings from 13th January for four weeks.
‘The dancing is a good mix of traditional and modern morris dances’, said dance teacher Stephen Newland. ‘And is an exciting way to keep fit and active. If you know your left foot from your right come along and give it a try. No obligation to dance out, but once bitten by the morris, you may well find it could change your life.’ ‘We are a friendly, sociable bunch and welcome male and female dancers ages from 16 upwards. ‘We dance in a lively style called ‘border morris’ using stick clashing to emphasize the beat. The Tavonians, Tavistock’s amateur theatre company, invite anyone interested in theatre to learn more about the skills involved, in open workshops starting this month.
There are 12 sessions, in three themed blocks - Creation, Conflict and Celebration. The January workshops, on creation, are:
Thursday 20th, 7.30pm at Tavistock Guide Hall on creating a character Friday 21st, 7.30pm at Tavistock Guide Hall on “vocal adrenalin” - singing for stage
Saturday 22nd 10am at the United Reformed Church Hall on devising and improvising
Saturday 22nd 1.30pm at the United Reformed Church Hall on elements of directing.
The block on conflict runs from 17th to 19th February at the same times and venues. For the March block on celebration - again 17th to 19th, the Saturday runs through to early evening with a performance of a “play in a day” drawing on skills

Anyone aged between 16 and 80 is welcome, and if you have never been involved in putting on a play, this is an ideal chance to sample what is involved. If you are an experienced thespian, you will also welcome the chance to hone your skills with the professional tutors, who include

Warm Up with Theatre Workshops

You can pick any mix of workshops to attend, to suit your interests and diary. However to encourage you to come to several, there are discounts for booking several workshops at least a week ahead. (Normal price £5 per session, reduced to £4.50 for any two in a block and £4 if all four are booked.) The Tavonians are grateful for a grant from West Devon Borough Council towards the cost.
