No One-Size-Fits-All Solution
by Kate Canfield, DOM, AP
overwhelmed trying to figure out just which one works best with our body type. According to Dr. Kate Canfield of Health Point, “As a physician, I know there is no one-size-fits-all for life-long nutrition.” However, Dr. Canfield sug- gests there is a program that is suitable for a large portion of the population. “For rapid weight loss, and reclaiming health, the program that works for most people is a low carbohydrate, low fat, ‘ideal’ protein regimen,” says Canfield. Here is how it works. “Restrict-
T
ing carbohydrates and sugars while providing the right amount of bioavail- able protein allows the pancreas a rest from working overtime to eliminate the dietary sugars in your blood.” The pancreas must produce insulin to re- move the sugar/carbohydrates from our blood. Insulin is a fat-storing hormone. Restricting these foods is like hitting a reset button on the pancreas which results in an average weight loss of 3 to
he diet industry is huge, and there are so many books and pro- grams on dieting, that we can get
7 pounds per week. “In addition,” says Canfield, “Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even pain, all improve, resulting in a reduced need for medications.”
Eliminating carbs for just three
days causes the body to start burning fat as a source of energy. According to Canfield, “This is a very healthy diet for most people, but you should be medi- cally screened for any diet program to make sure your protocol supports your health and your weight loss goals.” The program used at Health Point
is called “The Ideal Protein Diet.” It has been called the “Last Diet You Will Ever Need” and was developed by Dr. Tran Tien for Olympic athletes as an efficient way to lose fat while sparing muscle. “The structured phases of The Ideal Protein Diet work to ‘retrain’ your body’s metabolism,” says Canfield, “and include education on food combining and lifestyle strategies so you never have to regain the weight you worked so hard to lose.”
