everything and know that no matter what happens, they can blame non delivery of their promises on others is a good get of jail card. Slightly more annoying is when Conservatives work hard to get things done in our community and the successful results are high jacked as an opposi- tion success. Things really start to get annoying when Labour party mem- bers consistently fail to mention it was their government's abysmal han- dling of the nation's economy that got us in the muddle that we are now in. History shows that labour governments always fail on their tax and spend agenda, Tax to the hilt and then spend even more seems to be the old and the new Labour way.

Suffolk Coasts and Heaths

We are truly blessed in our area to live in the midst of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, AONB is of course the acronym. Suffolk has two AONB areas, the Coasts and Heaths of which I am a member and the Dedham Vale which encompasses parts of Essex. The two AONBs are working on the basis of a 30% cut in annual funding and the plans for this are in place already, basically all will be working smarter and making efficiencies wherever possible. The big question is why were the AONBs and of course all other public funded bodies not working as effi- ciently as possible before the threat of cuts loomed. The AONBs get 70% of their funding from Natural England, a quango left over from the last government, happily Natural England will no longer be the major funder. The money that came from them will now come straight from The Department for Rural Affairs, the rest of the funding comes from Suffolk County Council and 4 of the district and borough councils. Should a mir- acle occur and the AONBs do not have to face a 30% reduction in funding then any excess cash will be spent on the ground rather than in the office.

Felixstowe Shared Space

Despite a few teething problems and grumbles I am still of the opinion that the Shared Space scheme is a very good thing for our town. The fact that the time taken to complete the work on the ground was extended was very poor and might make a good case for divestment. The standard of the work appears to very good and the street furniture looks great. Drivers are slowly getting the idea that neither they nor pedestrians have right of way and are proceeding accordingly, pedestri- ans are looking before they wander across the street. Blue badge drivers tend to circle in the manner of Red Indians circling a wagon train as they hope for a parking slot to come free. Whilst I have the greatest sympathy with Blue Badge holders I feel some of them are not against taking advantage of the system. Some of these people hop from their cars and then stride off down Hamilton Road looking fit and well. My understanding of the rules is that the badge holder has to be in the vehicle that is being parked and has to leave the vehicle once parked and not just sit there.

Hamilton Road Traders

The traders in Hamilton Road have had a dire time, what with the reces- sion and the extended time taken to complete the road works. Just to make things worse, there has been very little publicity to inform people once the scheme was complete, about the only people doing any- thing have been the Felixstowe Community Radio. We hear about the big society and it is all around us in people like the volunteers of

Felixstowe Radio. More of the Big Society is in the traders, the Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce and some of the councillors getting together to promote Felixstowe. We all know the best way to get a job done to your own satisfaction is to do it your self or at the very least oversee how the job is done. We all want what is best for Felixstowe and we can all start by shopping locally, keeping our money in our town and encourag- ing others to come here.

Regards to all, John Goodwin Dear Sir,

Letter to the editor Thank you

I would like to give a big "thank you" to all the persons who helped me when I had my recent accident in Langer Park. I was surprised by a loose dog, lost my balance and fell near the children's playground. So many kind persons got an ambulance, waited with me until it came and sheltered me with an umbrella from the heavy rain.

I am now out of hospital complete with a new hip (the old one was per- fect!) and have to have 3 months convalescence. So all take care and mind how you go!

The ambulance personnel had difficulty in getting access to the park, no entry through the main gates and the large bar gate by the toilets was locked and eventually I had the agony of being wheeled on a trol- ley across rough ground to Langer Road. So many dogs run free in the park, on the beach and promenade and sea gardens leaving their fae- ces everywhere. Does Felixstowe have no byelaws?
