Felixstowe Ends 2010 On A High

After many months of disruption, the new shared space scheme on Hamilton Road in Felixstowe was officially opened on 10th December by Councillor Guy McGregor. The £2.8m scheme gives drivers and pedestrians an equal right of way along the main shopping street, meaning although it is not completely pedestrianised, cars are forced to go much slower down the road. On declaring the road "open for business again", Mr McGregor, who

is portfolio holder for roads and transport said: "What we have done here with the paving and the seating and lighting will ensure the town centre becomes a place where people can enjoy their surroundings." As well as the new road layout, the street has been furnished with seating, bicy- cle racks, flower beds and more dustbins. Peter Dawes, Chairman of Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce added: "The Chamber would like to offer the traders of Felixstowe a big thank you for being so patient during the road works and we hope that this is the start of a period of stability and growth for the town and economy of Felixstowe."

Christmas street stalls

The town celebrated being back in business with the return of late night shopping, held until 8pm on Fridays 10th and 17th December. Hamilton Road and the Triangle hosted Christmas street stalls selling hot chestnuts and mulled wine in an attempt to ensure the atmosphere was as festive as possible. Parking was free from 8pm to encourage trade into the town and the chamber organised for attractions such as street striker and fairground rides to keep everyone entertained. Peter Dawes contin- ued: "It was great to see so many shoppers and retailers support the late night shopping, which was great news for the town."

Therese Coffey MP

2010 was a busy year for the Chamber. Notable events include the recent 'MP question time' with our local representative Therese Coffey MP, which was held in conjunction with Refer-On, and the branding work- shop with Simon Middleton, the results of which we will see in the New

Year. The Chamber has made a significant contribution to Felixstowe's new CCTV system, and hosted 11 networking breakfasts in partnership with the Flyer, across 6 venues in the town. A new Facebook group was set up in order to communicate with all interested groups across Felixstowe, and the Chamber took an active part in the Felixstowe Futures forum and steering group, representing traders on a wide range of issues.

Visit Felixstowe

2011 will continue to be as busy, with the re-launch and development of the 'Visit Felixstowe' website, and a commitment from local traders and businesses to promote Felixstowe through a sustained marketing plan following the results of the consultation with Simon Middleton.

Big Battlefield Bike Ride 2011

Appeal for Sponsorship by John Miller Next year I'm off again and I make no apologies for that. I tried to get Headley Court to tell me how many of our lads' have passed through their doors since I wrote to you last year, that's classified was the response but believe me a lot of our young men have lost limbs, eye site , hearing or just lost their minds having been blasted to near death by an IED.I have to get more money for them and you can help me again please. Last year with your help I raised £10,200 and as a group of riders our total was over £1 MILLION.

I now personally can count as my friends, men I met last year horrendously wounded riding their bikes with a carbon fibre leg (or if paralysed propelling a special bike by hand) and they will be out there again next year battling back to some sort of sanity. You will have spotted the date - we start on D-DAY and ride from the beaches at Arramanche through the Falaise pocket and on into Paris and finally to the Arc de Triomphe and the tomb of the unknown French warrior. Last year all the disabled men beat me to Dunkirk next year see you in Paris lads! Please help "our blokes". VISIT ONLINE: www.bmycharity.com/john- miller DONATE HERE IT'S QUICK, SIMPLE, & SECURE
