News from Orwell and Deben High Schools
The New Year is always an important time for reflection, allowing us to assess our current situation and affect change to make improvements. For example, how many of us have made New Year's resolutions this month?
Rob Cawley
Change is a constant companion in education: after all, we are in the business of developing minds to improve aspirations for the next generation. The pace of change has also been vastly increased since the election in May last year. This undoubtedly will continue to have an effect on the future of education in Felixstowe as we start a
new term. I particularly want to focus on the Felixstowe Sixth Form this month as we approach the deadline for applications (14 January 2010) to study with us in September 2011.
and applications to study with us have grown to the point where we had the most applicants ever in 2010. Our new website (http://www.felixstowe-
sixthform.org.uk) provides a window into the experience of our students and reflects our ethos and success back into the community.
This history of growth, success and achievement obviously provides us with evidence and a firm foundation of what we are able to offer our students. That said, there is no doubt that the uncertainty over an academy in Felixstowe and the government cuts, coupled with the increasing number of post-16 education centres locally, could have an enormous impact on the continued growth and success of our Sixth Form.
The pressure comes from simple economics. The more students there are, the more money comes in and the more courses we can run. The reverse means that the more students that study elsewhere, the less money we have and so the less courses and opportunities we can provide.
We must make sure that Felixstowe Sixth Form continues to thrive at the heart of our community. It would be unthinkable to imagine all students aged 16+ having to leave the town to study for their A Levels!
I am incredibly proud of the Felixstowe Sixth Form. For decades, Deben and Orwell High Schools have worked in partnership to provide post- 16
students with a huge range of opportunities to study qualifications leading to employment or further study at University. Our results are annually in the top 10 in the county
It is important, therefore, to do what we can to persuade our students to see that Felixstowe Sixth Form can provide a fantastic education right on the doorstep. Whilst 'the grass may look greener' elsewhere, there is no escaping our commitment to continue to provide the best possible opportunities for student success and achievement right here in our local community.
My New Year's resolution is to make sure Felixstowe Sixth Form is a central part of our future success and prosperity. Will you join me?
A happy and prosperous New Year to all. Rob Cawley, Executive Headteacher Deben / Orwell High Schools
