Swimmers: Competition Great, Winning Better
T
he Multnomah Athletic Club’s competitive swim team took a trip
to Burnaby, B.C., for the 2010 Clan Cup meet. The meet featured primarily Canadian college and club teams; MAC was the only team not from Canada. MAC swimmers Ben Weston and Eetu Karvonen garnered top finishes in the 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Sixteen-year-old Carson Brindle finished third overall just ahead of Weston in the 50 freestyle. Weston, 29, trains with the MAC
competitive team and competes on both the senior and masters levels. He went a 1:53.24 in his 200 free and 4:04.27 in the 400 free. Weston finished fourth in the 100 free (52.35) and the 50 free (24.39). Karvonen, 24, went a 2:16.04 in his 200 breast, but wasn’t able to get wins in the 50 (29.17) or 100 breast (1:02.79), finishing second in both. He also went a 2:13.88 in the 200 IM, which was good for third overall.

“With everyone but one getting second swims in their events, the meet was a great experience,” says Coach Alex Nikitin. “But one thing we learned from the meet was it’s fun to compete, but winning is so much better.”
Brindle, the top 15-year-old in the nation in 2010 at the 50-meter freestyle, was seeded second going into finals after posting a 23.99, but slowed down a hair with a 24.13 final time. He also swam the 100 butterfly (1:00.08) and the 100 free (53.78) and finished 11th in both events. Brindle finished sixth in the 50 fly with a 26.85.
Swimmer Carson Brindle is one of this year’s nominees for the Mel Fox Award. Read more about Brindle on page 48.

The MAC competitive team has been attending more international meets because Coach Nikitin believes it prepares athletes who qualify to attend an opportu- nity to experience what it takes to succeed on a national and even international level. As more MAC athletes finish ahead of the pack, that success helps springboard the program to a higher level. For more information on MAC swimming, call the Aquatics Office at 503-517-7500 or go to
