ATHLETICS
Sayre and Heather Williams. Taking second all around were Sarah Fardanesh and Nicole Marchesi, and Alicia Bauer and Leah Sichel placed third all around.
The Sizzlin’ Sixes turn up the heat
The Six-sizzlin’ Level 6 team also won at sectionals. “After losing their first meet of the season, they turned things around 100 percent, winning every meet after that,” Hawkes says. “The team is mostly ‘newies,’ which makes their performance over the season even more impressive.”
Hawkes says that the team has a special spirit. “When a few do well, it motivates all of them to do well,” she says. “They have a very good work ethic; they could run their own practices.”
Capturing first-place all-around honors at sectionals were McKenna Hughes, Mary Packham and McKenna Spathas. Second- place all-around finishes went to Hannah Dodge, Alexis Renshaw, Regan Rice and Catherine Thompson; and a third-place all-around win went to Anna Duncan. Two Level 6 gymnasts, Lauren Spiegel and Charlotte Foden-Vencil, experienced season-ending injuries. “Our hearts always go out to these gymnasts, because they have worked so hard until that point,” Petit says.
Coaching a big part of MAC’s success
Janine Wirth, gymnastics booster president and parent of a girls Level 4 and a boys Level 6 gymnast, says that good coaching contributed to the successful season. “The coaches have our girls peaking at the right time,” she says. “At sectionals, we had personal bests from multiple gymnasts, which is just as they are going into the state championship meet.” Petit, who has returned to coaching compulsory girls after several years with MAC’s boys teams, says, “It’s great to be partnering with Candice – she’s a fantastic coach.”
Sara Allen, MAC member and parent of a Level 4 “newie,” summed up her daughter’s first competitive gymnastics season. “It’s been really rewarding to see her progress,” she says. “The coaching has been phenomenal. I’m very impressed with the individual attention they get.” For more information on MAC gymnastics, call the Gymnastics Office at 503-517-7560 or go to
