Cardiac Wellness Class Keeps Members Moving
M
AC Cardiac Wellness is a personal- ized workout class facilitated by a cardiac nurse and an exercise specialist from Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. This ongoing program is for any adult with heart disease, past heart surgery or heart attack, pacemaker, irregular heart rhythm, high blood pressure, hyper- lipidemia, or other heart risk factors. Participants meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45-2:30 p.m. Staff works with the members to set and implement goals such as increase strength, aerobic endurance, stamina, balance, upper and lower body resistance, and improve quality of life. Referral from a physician is required for participation in the program. Check-in at each class includes a resting blood pressure, heart rate, body weight, and a quick look at the heart rhythm with a defibrillator. Vitals are also checked during exercise and at cool down before leaving the class. Cardiac Wellness staff has the ability to communicate with the members’ physicians if necessary with any EKG rhythm changes, blood pressures, heart rates, and/or other changes or concerns by the member or staff.
Cool down at the end of class offers time for social interaction, trying new exercises led by the exercise specialists. These exercises focus on upper body resistance, balance, flexibility, yoga, mats, exercise balls, and relaxation techniques. The MAC Cardiac Wellness group has been meeting since 2002. It began with eight members; there are now 30 members enrolled. In past years there has been a long waiting list. In the spring of 2010, MAC and Legacy Health Systems agreed to expand the program and add a MAC exercise specialist. There are currently five open spots.
Active members and staff sing the praises of the Cardiac Wellness program. “This is a fun, energetic group of people that I have grown to enjoy and care very much about,” says MS Exercise Specialist Alecia Pollard. “I can see changes in each member, from balance,

Wellness for six years,” says Ray Dodge. “I love the camaraderie that the program provides, plus the benefits of regular blood pressure and heart rhythm checks.” “My physician likes that I am involved, the staff is knowledgeable and I feel more secure when I come two times a week,” explains Fran Hermanson.
“I like the members of the group and feel like people care and keep tabs on me,” says Tom Marineau. “I have been in the group for eight and a half years and I owe it all to the staff that I am alive and well.” For more information on Cardiac
