ADMI N IST RATIVE
Application Processing Fee Effective Jan. 1
T
he MAC Membership Committee requires a background check on every adult applicant before recommending him or her to the Board of Trustees for membership. The membership department conducts the checks through an online service that researches public records from federal, state, county and municipal courts anywhere an applicant resided during the past seven years.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, new applica- tions require a fee to cover the expense of each background check. The processing fee is $50 per adult. Family applications with two adults are charged $100, since both must be checked.
The fee applies to new nonresident applicants, ethnic diversity invited appli- cants, spouses adding to the account of current members, and legacy children applying for senior membership. It is also
required when athletic members, member coaches and music members submit appli- cation for regular senior membership. Applications submitted prior to Dec. 31, 2010, are exempt, including those on the 2009 lottery list because they paid a lottery application fee.
For more information about the club’s application process, call 503-517-7280.
The information collected is confiden- tial and only shared with the applicant, Membership Committee and Board of Trustees as needed. If the search of public records turns up no issues, the staff simply reports that the background check was clear. If the records include charges for misdemeanors, felonies or other red
flags, the membership manager reviews the information with the Membership Committee chair, who determines how to proceed. Applicants are required to explain any charges, convictions or pleas of no context for any felony or misdemeanor. The Membership Committee considers each situation on its own merit, and the Board of Trustees makes the final decision on each applicant.
Applicants are asked to disclose any felony or misdemeanors charges on their applicant forms. If information that has not been revealed is discovered in a back- ground check, the applicant may be denied membership.
In addition to the background check, letters provided by the proposer and three references assist the Membership Committee and the Board of Trustees in judging the character of the applicant. Questions about the membership application process or the processing fee can be directed to Member Services at 503-517-7280. WM
