December 26-31: LaSalette Christmas Lights Display, Enfield, NH. View 50,000 lights on over 20 acres of hillside. 5-9 p.m. LaSalette Shrine, 410 NH Route 4. (603) 632-9812. December 26-31: African-American Quilts Today: A Celebration of Motherhood, Sisterhood & the Matriarchs, Lowell, MA. Bringing together the works of noted contemporary African-American quilt artists Soniè Ruffin, NedRa Bonds, Sherry Whetstone- McCall, and Michele David, the groundbreaking thematic exhibit showcases the ways in which contemporary fiber artists combine Afrocentric themes and visual language with the concerns of contemporary African-American women, centering on work, family,

friendship, religious values, and spirituality—issues that resonate with American women of all generations. The quilts, which include a variety of themes, styles, and techniques, and range from portraiture to landscapes to abstract works, represent one of the single largest collections of works by contemporary African-American fiber artists to be shown on the East Coast in the past decade. Some address deeply personal familial relationships, individual history, and local stories, while others take a wide view of history and contemporary mores with references to fertility and motherhood, political issues related to identity, and the ways in which African American women inspire and empower their world and the world in which they live.
