The longing look framing a quick, final glance at the box of treasures was barely noticeable. Afterward, the child handed the shoebox to the boy’s mother. Through glistening eyes the mother accepted the gift, thanking the child and telling her how much it would mean to her son. The entire exchange took only a moment, but the Christmas story had once again been told.
Some might argue that the parents, a grandmother, and teachers with a group of children who walked through the cold taking gifts to a homeless shelter is not the same as the shepherds leaving their flocks to visit the Christ Child.
And perhaps the lone worker who would stay the night with the residents of the shelter and who told the group about the wonderful mission of the shelter and of the people who stayed there because, well, there was no room for them anywhere else, is not reminiscent of the angel who shared Good News so long ago. And certainly some might say that a shoebox containing not-so-new Sillybandz given to the mother of a homeless child is no match for the gold, frankincense, and myrrh given to the mother of the infant Sav- ior.
Perhaps this had just been a group of parents, a grandmother, children, and Sunday school teachers who delivered blankets, cookies, and Sillybandz to a homeless shelter ... On the other hand, perhaps God has once more in- terrupted history, recreating the Christ event before our very eyes — again using ordinary people in an extraordinary way.
Holy God, open our eyes so that we may see Your Word miraculously lived out before our very eyes. AMEN
