Alliance Lighting launches UK office

Alliance Lighting has opened it’s UK office. As partners with several of the world’s best architectural lighting manufacturers, Alliance Lighting will provide world-class products and service to UK lighting specifiers. With offices in the UK and the US, Alliance is uniquely positioned to support UK specifiers with their domestic and international projects. Representing Whitegoods, Vode, Technilum, Lumenpulse, Filix and ALM, the company’s goal is to create long-term relationships with lighting professionals, educating them on the capabilities of our manufacturing partners, and supporting them with their technical and logistical needs. Jointly directed by Mark DeVries from Alliance Lighting in the U.S. and Douglas James of Whitegoods in London, the formation of Alliance Lighting UK has the combined expertise of two lighting veterans and will formally launch at The ARC Show this month.

News & Business

Bridging the gap

A team including members from Form Associates and Speirs + Major has won an international competition to light the 4km-long San Diego Coronado Bridge in California. The project to light the iconic 1969 girder bridge is led by artist Peter Fink and lighting designer Mark Major in association with Buro Happold in LA, and will be the largest interactive green energy lighting project in North America. The team’s design incorporates programmable LED lighting powered by wind turbines. The lighting will respond to the rate and intensity of road traffic on the bridge, as well as major boat traffic through the shipping channel, and aims to emphasise the San Diego–Coronado Bay Bridge’s importance as a gateway between communities. The Port of San Diego and the California Department of Transportation chose the team’s scheme over two other finalists, including the French design firm Bideau Company, which has lit the Eiffel Tower and the Acropolis, and a proposal from environmental artist Ned Kahn and Patrick McInerney Architects with engineering consultants Arup.

Award winners

Chelsom has scooped first prize in the hotel design ‘Product Innovation Awards’ at The Sleep Event 2010. The winning entry, the SLIM desk lamp, was up against stiff competition from more than 20 international product design companies including Dyson and Grohe.

Thorn Lighting, together with Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Durham University, has won the Environmental Technology Collaboration Award at The Engineer Technology & Innovation Awards 2010. Robert Llewellyn presented the award “for addressing fundamental issues over the performance and production of light emitting polymers.”
