Hopefully you are all refreshed from the Christmas break and all set for the year ahead!

We kick off the new year with a bigger issue, including a special 16-page show supplement dedicated to the ARC Show on the 12-13th and interiors 2011 on the 23-26th of this month. Turn to page 31 for the full low down on what’s on at both shows, including seminar programmes as well as a preview of some of the products on show.

Congratulations to all the winners of LIF’s EMILAS (Energy Management in Lighting Awards Scheme), which took place in November. You can read the awards review on P24. The day also included LIF’s annual seminar and exhibition. There were many notable speakers on the day, but the individual who particularly made me sit up and think was the SLL’s secretary, Liz Peck. This is a lady with a clear passion for lighting and the necessity to reduce energy and carbon emissions before its too late. She pushed the need to harvest daylight within lighting schemes where possible. ‘Daylight isn’t the same all day, so why should your artificial lighting be?’ Its no surprise that people get eye strain and headaches sitting under the same type of lighting for many hours a day. ‘We should be lighting for people not for buildings. Start with daylight then worry about your artificial lighting,’ says Peck. ‘The right light, for the right reasons, at the right time.’ Wise words, which are supported by Light Bureau’s Paul Nulty, who shares his thoughts on designing for people on P82.

See you at the shows!
