elcome to casino life.
Exhibitions, like taxi
drivers, tend to be great economic litmus tests. Two years ago, Las Vegas, and it’s cab stands, were virtually empty and the G2E exhibitors were cheerfully optimistic but basically worried. This year told a
different story. Vegas is still the city with the highest unemployment figures but as the rest of the US starts to recover, then a positive change can only be less than a year away. Once America starts to have some fun, Las vegas will be back on the radar. On the gaming side the new products on display showed an increased optimism - just when you thought that nothing more could be done with a slot machine, someone proves you wrong. Whether it’s hot spots, wild zones or finger-flickable screens the emphasis was on activity and fun. It was also good to see last years R&D on show in real casinos rather than at an exhibition. On the show floor the visitor numbers were up and, always
welcome, of the right calibre. Lots of spanish speaking visitors also meant that SAGSE did not quench the thirst for more product in South America. Here in Ukraine it’s a little too early to predict which way the
legislation will point but gaming is definitely coming back. With a massive budget deficit looming and IMF loans to repay the country needs extra revenue. Chatting to the Director of Economic Foreign Policy last week he hinted that there could also be some leeway for slots as well as live gaming - and perhaps I would like to assist with that piece of the legislation? I’ll keep you posted on the casino life blog. And so to ICE... we hope to see you in London!
