A


lthough born in Portugal, Luís Aranha has spent more than a third of his life hundreds of miles away from his homeland. His “expatriation” began in the mid-1980s, when he went to Japan to work in various companies in the luxury field. His debut in the world of fashion only came later when, in 1994, he was invited to head Nina Ricci, where he was responsible for the brand’s ready-to-wear, jewellery, cosmetics and perfumes, amongst other products. His tie to fashion would remain until today and it’s what would, in fact, bring him back to Portugal.


“I left Nina Ricci in 2004, and for two years I continued to work in the field of fashion in Japan, but in another position, more related to the financial area and emer- gent acquisitions. I helped create some part- nerships between Japanese and European companies, and in 2006, I came to Europe.” With official residence in Germany, Luís lived between the fashion capitals of Paris and Milan for three years, working for his own companies and for others. “I returned to Portugal in 2009, but not before I knew what I would be doing.” From his contacts with private equity and investment companies, he arrived at Ana Salazar at a time when the designer herself sought a new investor to create a new phase in the life of the company. Together with João Barbosa, also linked to private equity, they acquired the majority of the company in September 2009. Luís also has other businesses in Portugal, also in the world of fashion, but this past year has been dedicated solely to the Ana Salazar company. And it’s easy to see why. A born businessman, Luís Aranha saw the potential of the Ana Salazar label and implemented a strategy that made full use of that potential. “It’s a fashion company that is effectively centred on a designer. In Portugal, that’s an 
