58 Dec. 18 - Jan. 7, 2011 CCYSA dishes on ‘Spice’

Chandler residents now know more about “Spice,” a new drug gaining popularity in the youth community, following a meeting presented by the Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse and hosted by ICAN.

According to CCYSA, “Spice,” a legal substance sold in Arizona and elsewhere in the country, is a synthetic cannabinoid that produces the same “high” effect as marijuana. It is sold as incense at local convenience stores, smoke shops, liquor stores and online. A warning label states that the substance is “not for human consumption.” With the help of the Chandler Police Department and the Chandler Unified School District, the CCYSA taught Chandler residents who attended the presentation what Spice looks like, where to get it, common nicknames and side effects. The presentation was given in both English and Spanish. Local restaurant El Zocalo donated chips and salsa for the event.

The CCYSA is made up of community stakeholders, including youth, parents, merchants, law enforcement, schools, city employees and others from Chandler, including ICAN, who are dedicated to preventing underage drinking and substance abuse in the community.

ICAN is a local nonprofit organization providing prevention programs to at-risk youth. For more information, visit www.icanaz.org.
