Coach Roye with some late-game strategy — the Cougars fell to the Rams 55-50 on Dec. 10
Sports Sports
Cougar head coach Patrick Roye noted Raymond as a “tough draw for the first game.” But he added that “you never know with the first game.” Expectations from the coach were simple: “I look for hard play … to out-hustle the opponent and to learn.” Roye also added that he requires his team to handle what happens in the game with class. The game started with a tentative, yet

four-ranked team in division 3 boy’s basketball is not the easiest of home openers. However, as the scheduling gurus would have it, that’s just what the Campbell Cougars had to do on opening night by taking on the Rams from Raymond High School. In a hard- fought contest, the varsity boys faded at the end and dropped a 55-50 decision on Friday, December 10. Acknowledging a worthy opponent,

Raymond’s senior guard Kevin Paynter (#15) tied the score at 10 with a dazzling drive to the hoop. A quick- answer three from Max Gouveia for the home team put Campbell up 13-10 after the first stanza. The Cougars came out blazing in the second frame, scoring six points in the first minute of play as Josh Morgan’s long-range jumper put the hosts up 19-13. Then, to cap off a 9-4 Cougar run just two minutes in, Morgan’s old- fashioned three-pointer gave his team the biggest lead of the night at 22-14. Both teams were cool from the field during the middle of the period, but a late 4-0 mini run by Raymond allowed them to close to within one, making it 28-27 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room with new Xs and Os, the Rams charged to a 35-28 lead on an impressive 8-0 run. Senior center Tyler Syphers was able to stop the bleeding temporarily with two

free throws. The Cougars continued to shoot poorly from the field, failing on opportunities to cut into the lead. An overall sloppy-played period left the visitors clinging to a three-point lead after three. Tied at 40, two minutes into the fourth quarter, Ram’s first team All- State Joe Morin knocked down a three-pointer, followed by teammate Paynter’s hoop, pushed the RHS lead to 45-40 with just four and a half

Cougar Boys Fall Short in Home Opener, JV Boys Shine in Preliminary Game
minutes to play. With just under two minutes left in the game, Cougar Josh Morgan drained one of his five triples on the night to keep CHS within five. Seconds later, however, that three- pointer was matched by Jeff Lang of Raymond. The Rams missed five of eight free throws down the stretch to keep the Campbell cheering section’s hopes alive, but to no avail. Another Morgan three with just 6.4 seconds remaining was too late, as the Cougars went down to defeat. Leading the way for RHS with a game- high 24 points and all-around tremendous effort was senior guard and four-year varsity player Kevin Paynter. Junior Joe Morin chipped in with a dozen points. For the Cougars, senior forward and thousand-point scorer Josh Morgan, despite an off night from the floor, still registered 23 points for the black and red. Earlier in the evening, the JV Cougars ran rough-shod over the Rams with a 75-28 trouncing. Head coach Michael Dunham attributed the victory to his team’s great guard play, overall great execution, and,
in particular, the play of sophomore center Nick Freson. “He had a phenomenal game,“ according to Dunham. Forward Dan Driscoll scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. The varsity boys hoopsters next play on Monday, December 20, when they host Somersworth in “The Den“ at 7 p.m.
