Thunderbird missile being manoeuvred onto a launcher at Manorbier.
In the 1970s, to reduce costs, several Air Defence and Field Artillery Schools - including Manorbier - were closed and amalgamated into the Air Defence Wing at Larkhill. However the firing range has been retained for use by the Army and Territorials. Public access is prohibited, but a number of military installations dating from the 1930s to more recent times can be seen from the road leading to Skrinkle Haven or from the coast path. The wartime buildings still standing behind the perimeter fence include the brick-built guardroom, a Nissen hut, two semi-sunken command posts and several gun emplacements.
The base is all that survives of the former Dome Trainer, a concrete dome which provided artificial con- ditions for the training of anti-aircraft gunners.
