The 5th Crowne Plaza Coogee Arts Festival... ...Bigger And Better Than Ever Before!

his month the Crowne Plaza Coogee Arts Festival returns with a unique programme including theatre, music, film (including a 24 hour film festival), theatresports and the odd party along the way to inspire your summer days and nights.

2008 will see the biggest and best festival yet with all the usual events plus some new improve- ments to cement its place as the area’s number one event. We’ve briefly outlined the main attrac- tions here but you can get more information on dates, times and ticketing at the festival’s website

In parkland at the south end of Coogee Beach, perched on cliffs and surrounded by streets with Shakespearean names such as Oberon, Titania and Arden is the Federation style rotunda and beautiful tiered grass amphitheatre of Grant Reserve. This stunning setting is the home of Shake- speare Under The Stars and for the festival’s fifth season they will be performing one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays - “The Twelfth Night.”

Stinkwater! Short Film Festival The fourth Stinkwater! Short Film Festival turns international this year as the call goes out for films from around the world. And what better place for an international film fes- tival than the fabulous surrounds of the Ritz Cinema, Randwick, one of the few original art deco cinemas left in Sydney.

The Crowne Plaza Coogee Arts Festival is thrilled to be presenting its own Theatresports competition. Come to Cushion Bar in Crowne Plaza Coogee and see the comic mayhem that inspired shows such as “Thank God You’re Here” and “Who’s Line is it, Anyway” as the teams launch into unscripted

lunacy. Each week they will battle each other for a place in the final where one team will be crowned with the Crowne Plaza Crown!

Croquet By The Sea

“Bisque, Booby, Scatter Shot” - a night on leave with the French For- eign Legion? No, it’s the fabulous, exciting world of croquet! The Arts Festival is giving you the opportu- nity to discover a great fun day out on the green at the finest croquet establishment in Sydney - the Coogee Croquet Club.

Stinkwater! 24!

Ever wanted to make a short film? Have a great idea but never had the chance to screen it? Grab a camera, some friends and head to Coogee Beach for a fun weekend as you turn your idea from page to screen in just 24 hours. The competition begins with each team handed a list of loca- tions and objects, some of which have to be included in their film. Then the fun begins! Script, act, edit and hand your film in 24 hours later. On Sunday the 10th of February the top 12 films will screen in the Oceanic Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Hotel - films from page to screen in a weekend!

Twilight Music Sessions

The Twilight Music Sessions have grown in popularity recently as unique festival experiences and in 2008 they are set to become even more spectacular with a fabulous new venue. With no fences or bar- ricades, the audience will descend from all directions to beautiful Clovelly Beach. Bring your swim- mers, a picnic dinner and join the fun as you finish great summer Sydney weekends listening and dancing to some of the best musi- cians Australia has to offer.

Classics Under The Stars With a program designed for the Crowne Plaza Coogee Arts Festival,

and infused with Opera arias, join the Sydney Chamber Orchestra, 25 of Australia’s best classical musi- cians, as they reveal the inspiring worlds of Bach, Mozart, Puccini and other musical greats.

World Music Night

Join the hottest Latin musicians in Australia, Reyes de la Onda, for a fabulous night of salsa dancing right on the beach at Clovelly. Then cool off in the ocean before experiencing amazing gypsy and West African rhythms as Django Reinhart-inspired Arabesque bring special guests for a one-off performance.

Funk & Grooves

This evening will begin with the soulful grooves of J-A-A-W. Then one of the grooviest bands on the festival circuit, Three Quarters Hazel, will take to the stage with their unique blend of rhythms and African percussions. Finish the night dancing to one of the best party bands in Australia and Eastern Suburbs favourites, the Martini Club, as the moon comes up over Clovelly Bay.

The Walk For Life

The Walk For Life is hosted with the sole purpose of raising money for a local charity, the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Entrants will gather at the south end of Grant Reserve (just near Wylie’s Baths) and from there they will walk along the beauti- ful coastal path down past the Coogee beachfront, through Gor- don’s Bay, around the Clovelly car park and return along the same route to end up where they started, back at Grant Reserve.

Once at Grant Reserve, break- fast will be served while you relax in the park and the kids can play on jumping castles, have their faces painted and be generally entertained. “You’ve walked the path a thousand times, now do it for those who can’t...”
