TRANSPORT Success story

Transwide provides refreshing transport execution solution for Miller Brands UK

M

iller Brands UK (Woking) has chosen the Transwide online communication platform to increase visibility in its inter- modal transport execution

processes. Miller Brands was launched in 2005 and is a subsidiary of SABMiller, one of the world's largest brewers. Miller Brands is responsible for the development of all SABMiller’s international premium brands across the UK and Ireland.

Visibility on goods through interface

In order to manage deliveries in the UK and Irish markets, the transport process includes some inter-modal legs where visibility, risk, and quality of service are of primary importance. Miller Brands needed to address three major issues in its transport/logistics/supply chain processes:

• First, Miller Brands needed to increase visibility concerning in-transit inventories.

• Secondly, the company needed to gain visibility on inventories tied-in with third parties.

• Thirdly, it wanted to manage the relationship with its contracted transport companies based on facts and KPIs.

In order to satisfy these three criteria, Miller Brands UK implemented Transwide’s electronic transport order module twCall-off, and the tracking and tracing module twTrace. These modules were implemented in a way that allowed management of Miller Brands UK’s inter-modal European transport processes. Through an interface with its ERP system,

the company sends transport order details directly to its transport providers, but uses the same information exchange to cover two transport legs within the same transport execution process:

“ The biggest benefit that

Transwide created was an effective communication platform with our carriers; reducing the logistics planning process by 50 per cent. Since then we have been able to reduce inventories and improve visibility in our demand planning process.”

– Glenn Burgess, Miller Brands UK.

• Leg 1:Transport of the goods from brewery to the port of destination. A status report entered by the hauliers in twTrace clearly differentiates the first part from the second.

• Leg 2:Transport of the goods from the port of destination to the distribution centre. A status report entered by the hauliers indicates the start of the second part of the transport process.

Within this multi-modal transport process Miller Brands UK is kept up to date on its goods in transit in ‘real-time’, and the process is made even more efficient due to additional information can be exchanged using the ‘Upload Doc’ functionality of Transwide. By uploading a wide range of documents (from photos to signed PODs) operational people are constantly aware of the status of the goods.

Effective communication platform

“We were looking for a solution which could be implemented very easily and yet had the flexibility of managing a specific transportation process,” said Glenn >>
