submitted by Karen Bowie For those contemplating a winter getaway this year, the Litchfield Middle School (LMS) fifth-grade Travel Agent Convention was the perfect venue for inspiration and information. Three fifth-grade classes toiled for many weeks to prepare for the event, with the help of dedicated community volunteers working in the library, guided by LMS librarian Yvonne Wallace. Each year, students are assigned a state as they study U.S.
geography. They are asked to imagine that they are travel agents, charged with the task of convincing conventioneers to visit their assigned state. Tri-fold boards and a carefully worded oral report are the methods used for evaluating the students’ work, and the parents and relatives who attend the convention make the whole
supervision and training that are necessary to effectively run the fire department?”Fire Chief Murray stated, “Have no choice— yes.”
In speaking to his motion, Coutu stated that “I believe and have believed for some time we are administratively top- heavy…sometimes you have to make the most difficult. Cut or re-organize. You can make it work and achieve it and not affect the supervision, training…will work with proper thought and consideration…as a team unit.” Jasper agreed by stating that “I don’t disagree with the thought. But, never this way, the plan has always come before the budget.”
Chairman Massey stated, “The Chief has discretion to move [money] between accounts. I would like to amend the motion that the Chief produce a plan within the entire Fire Department budget to cut $100,000.” The motion was made and the motion to reduce line 101 by $100,000 dollars won by a vote of 3 to 2, with Massey and Jasper against. However, at the December 1 Budget Meeting review of the Fire Department,
exercise rewarding and fun for the students, as they offer praise to the enthusiastic “travel agents.” While parents sought out their own child at the convention, they were careful to review other students’ work, to the delight of all. A thoughtful comment and a word of praise were so appreciated by these hard-working students, and parents appeared pleased with the overall experience. “They really knew their stuff” and “I’d never considered visiting Missouri until today” were a few of the comments overheard at the convention. One imagines the dinner conversation in houses across Litchfield, as families plan upcoming vacations. Fifth graders may have some influence over those destinations after participating in the Travel Agent Convention!

Chief Murray completely changed his budget story, and slammed the Board of Selectmen. Citing safety, training, and liability concerns, Chief Murray vented to the Budget Committee his need to have the $100,000 restored to his budget. When asked by Budget Member Joyce
Goodwin if the $100,000 budget cut would have an impact, Chief Murray stated, “As we try to find a way to deal with that, it will have a significant impact.” Referring to a 2004 study of the Fire Department, he stated that, “There are elements in the report which talk about the needs to re-align and spread out supervision, and changes the title of the Assistant Fire Chief to Fire Marshall, and have a Deputy Chief of support and a Deputy Chief of Operations. We established a training position. The [report] said, ‘training [needed to be offered, or we would be] putting town in huge liability.” Chief Murray continued to state that the “elimination of one of the three-command staff” would have “lots of impacts. I have to provide this town with adequate services.”
Chief Murray went on to state that the reduction of command staff would impact

When she is not swallowing on her own, the saliva needs to be constantly suctioned, which has been possible with great help from Mike. With mom being a LNA, Lilly could not be in better hands. This family, with a rock-solid foundation in Hudson, has never, and
would never call upon us for help if it weren’t for dire circumstances. Between doctors’ bills, nursing fees, and special equipment for Lilly’s needs, the family’s savings and wages have been depleted. Now is the time for us to reach out and help them—to help a family who has helped so many of us without us even knowing through their efforts of attending spaghetti suppers, Boy Scout yard sales, donating to food pantries, and participating in town events for nearly four generations. “I just need to get my head above water and back on my feet,” said Mike with pride for his daughter, for whom he has and will continue to do everything in the world. Each of us is here for a reason; some of us never know our reason, but that doesn’t change anything—we still have one. Lilly’s reason is still unclear, but I am willing to bet is has to do with reminding each of us that together nothing is impossible, and love is the path to choose.
It is said, “God only gives you what you can handle.” I don’t agree. I think it’s a nice thing to say when there is just nothing else to say because the situation is catastrophic and you feel like you have to say something. I found a poem while preparing for the story; it states, “Life doesn’t mean security,” and “kisses aren’t contracts.” However, love and kisses will always be what Lilly is to her family, and a terrific message to our own families.

“emergency command incidence” during a town-wide disaster. He also stated that the elimination of a captain could possibly affect certifications, OSHA and EPA concerns, as well as place “this town in a higher level of risk and liability. There are unintended consequences which will affect the fire services of this town.” Budget Committee Member Charlie
Schweiss stated, “The town is upset with tax rate. The job of the two boards [Selectmen and Budget] is to look and see how they can manage the town as best as they can. $100,000 is a little jump. Is it this worth the security and safety? When we see something like this come in, you can go a little far.”

Selectman Coutu stated that the Fire Chief did not follow the “chain of command” and also stated that Chief Murray did not share any of his thought during the selectmen’s deliberations. “I feel as though we have been undermined.”
