was rocking last Friday night as the Lady Cougars basketball team dismantled the visiting Prospect Mountain squad by a score of 75-34 in the season opener. In apparent mid-season condition, the Cougars opened up the game defensively with a stifling full-court press that forced the Timberwolves into several turnovers. However, both teams suffered early shooting woes and it wasn’t until almost two and half minutes into the game that Campbell broke the scoring freeze. Continuous pressure by the Cougars, along with excellent ball movement and interior passing, led to a 15-0 run before Prospect Mountain finally got on the board when junior Emily Barrett converted

on an old-fashioned, three-point play nearly seven minutes into the opening stanza. True to head coach Shawn Flynn’s aggressive team defense philosophy, the Cougars continued to implement a full-court press, forcing the visitors to turn the ball over repeatedly. A steal and lay- up by Kristen Hrubowchak and a long-distance three-pointer from Marissa Framarini, followed by a theft and lay-up by Liz Pettis on consecutive T’wolves’ miscues, propelled Campbell to a 45-12 lead at the intermission.

More of the same opened up the second half, as Hrubowchak started the scoring by picking up a loose ball and converting on an acrobatic drive to the hoop. Campbell led 60-23 after three quarters and when Pettis drained a three- pointer to open up the final stanza, Coach Flynn decided to make wholesale changes in personnel. “We have a well-rounded basketball team,“ he said, alluding to his team’s deep bench and interchangeable parts. In the waning moments of the game, Abbi Houlne connected for three from the top of the key to close out the scoring for the night. In a balanced attack, Liz Pettis led all scorers with 18 points while dishing out three assists. Rebecca Arnone had a monster game with a double-double performance, scoring 12 and pulling down 12 rebounds. Kristen Hrubowchak chalked up 15 points, along with a game-high seven steals. Emily Barret led PMHS with nine points. After the game,

flowing in the locker room.“ Assistant coach Rod Hayward anticipated “organized chaos” to rule the action on the court—and the girls delivered. In praising his team’s effort, Coach Flynn added, “they are a fun bunch to coach; they are ready to listen, learn, and be coached.” “Our biggest asset is team chemistry,” he said. The praise didn’t end with his girls’ team. Coach Flynn had kind words about the Campbell system in general, but more specifically, to the winning attitude that has trickled down from the soccer program. Four of his current players were part of the state championship soccer team this past season. In the preliminary game, the JV Cougars

couldn’t quite hang on to a late lead, as they fell to Prospect Mountain, 37-33. Brianna Hardy had a huge night, scoring 17 points in the losing effort. Although JV head coach Shawn Baskerville was pleased with his team’s overall performance, his assessment of the outcome of the game was clear- cut: “We have to work on breaking the press.”

The Lady Cougars are next in action on Friday, December 10, as they travel to Raymond before returning home on Friday, December 17, to host Mascenic Regional. While the girls teams are on the road at Raymond, the boys will be hosting Raymond in their home opener. Tip-off for these games is 7 p.m.
