This was a project Jessica McQuesten initiated several years ago as a high school sophomore and has since continued due to its success and community interest. The Litchfield Lions Club was founded in 2003 to provide humanitarian services to the Litchfield community. The club provides yearly eye testing to Litchfield school children, annual scholarships to graduating seniors, and a free Almost
Summer BBQ social. The club is focused on needs in our community and has obtained a magnification reading machine for a legally blind first grader, hearing aids for a person who was unable to afford them, and provided eye exams and glasses for those in need. The club has also recently collected hats, mittens, scarves, and socks for children, donated to the Litchfield food pantry, and paid for postage for school children to send packages to service personnel. For more information about the club, visit www.

Representatives Ulery and Renzullo Prepare for the 2011 Legislative Session
State Representatives Jordan Ulery and
Andy Renzullo recently returned from the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) States and Nation Policy Summit, where they participated in working groups to discuss key issues important to Hudson’s citizens and met with other legislators from across the nation facing similar problems. “Americans across the nation were
very clear when they voted on November 2. They want decisions made closer to home and want the federal government out of their personal decision making. The citizens of Hudson deserve to have the government work for them—not the other way around. I plan to work diligently with my conservative colleagues for less spending and reducing the size of government. Our citizens should not bear the burden of the recession by footing the bill for out-of-control spending,” said Ulery. There was a strong economic focus
at ALEC’s conference, with discussions centered around doing more in the states

A blend of veteran lawmakers and newcomers make up the House Republican leadership team announced by recently elected House Majority Leader Representative D.J. Bettencourt of Salem. Representative Shawn Jasper of Hudson, starting his ninth term at the State House, will serve as his Deputy Majority Leader. Jasper has served in a number of leadership roles during his tenure in Concord and will work closely with Bettencourt in establishing the Republican agenda. “Representative Jasper brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the majority office,” said Bettencourt. “He has earned the respect of our caucus over the years through his hard work and dedication to the legislative process and will be a tremendous asset to our team,” he added.

with less money, economic growth and development, and how to maintain public safety in times of reduced budgets. Renzullo and Ulery actively participated in workshops in which they plan to bring legislative initiatives back to the state, such as reducing costs, reducing government interference in daily lives, creating service efficiencies, and working to assure family safety and security. “ALEC’s States and Nation Policy Summit provided me the opportunity to learn what fiscally conservative solutions have worked in other states and how others have dealt with federal mandates. I also had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Senators and Congressmen, in which I expressed the concerns of Hudson’s citizens about federal encroachment and reducing spending,” said Renzullo. Peter Silva of Nashua, who distinguished himself in just his first term as a member of the House Judiciary committee, has been tapped by Bettencourt to serve as the Majority Whip. “I believe that it is important that we bring a mixture of both veteran legislators and newcomers onto our team. Representative Silva impressed many of us as a first-year member last session and I know that he will bring a fresh prospective to the majority office,” said Bettencourt. Representative Betsey Patten of Moultonborough, also entering her ninth term in the House, will join the leadership team as the Deputy Majority Whip. In naming Patten, Bettencourt pointed to her experience as both a former committee chair and member of leadership. “I have seen firsthand over the last few years how hard Representative Patten works on legislation and I am excited to have her part of our leadership team.” Joining Representative Patten

Hooksett (first term). Representative Paul Mirski of Enfield, who returns for his sixth term following a four-year absence from the House, has been named the Majority Policy Advisor to the leadership team. “Representative Mirski is one of the most respected members of the Republican caucus and I will count heavily on his advice and counsel as we move forward in the legislative session,” said Bettencourt. Finally, Representatives Phil Greazzo of Manchester and Michelle Peckham of North Hampton, both newcomers to the State House, will fill the role of Majority Freshman Liaison. “With such a large incoming freshman class, it is important that they have a strong voice within the entire caucus. Both Representatives Greazzo and Peckham will work as liaisons between the freshmen caucus and leadership,” concluded Bettencourt. Representative Bettencourt will gather his leadership team this month to begin mapping out the coming session. It is anticipated that the Chair and Vice Chairs of the House standing committees will be announced later this month.
