We Need Your Help The Salem Christmas Fund is in dire need of toys to give to needy children this
year. According to Chairman Alan Phair, the Christmas Fund’s toy store is normally filled with toys that are to be given out next week. Such is not the case this year, as there is a noticeably sparse selection. While the fund does get special requests that are handled through wish trees at various spots throughout town, the majority of toys come via people dropping them off at the local drop boxes at locations throughout town. Salem Police Department personnel collect the toys on a regular basis and deliver them to the “store,” where Santa’s helpers walk around with the needy parents and let them pick gifts for their children. Everything from stocking stuffers, stuffed animals, games, books, arts and crafts, and other toys up to an occasional bicycle are available.
Phair is concerned that unless donation increases dramatically over the weekend and into early next week, there will not be enough toys to go around. The money received through donations goes toward food and clothing for the children and elderly in need, and not a lot goes towards actually purchasing of toys other than some for the teens, for whom people rarely seem to donate. If people would like to donate any new, unused toys, they can drop them off at the Salem Police Station at 9 Veterans Parkway, or at one of the various Toys for Tots boxes throughout Town.
