by Robyn Hatch Veterans in Salem gathered on Tuesday to remember what happened on December 7, 1941. Never should people forget the attack on Pearl Harbor, as well as all of the other wars that America has fought prior to the present-day Iraq and Afghanistan. “On this day in 1941, the blue skies over

Pearl Harbor on the Island of Oahu turned gray as 353 Japanese warplanes swarmed over the base unleashing their cargoes of death,” spoke Hubert O’Hearn to the people present for Salem’s ceremony. From 7:55 to 9:45 a.m., the planes pounded United States military installations. The cost in American military personnel was high: 2,335 killed, 1,200 wounded, nine ships sunk, and nine others heavily damaged. Only 29 Japanese aircraft were shot down. The architect of the attack, Admiral Iisoruru Yamamotto, had ordered

Lest we forget

Japanese diplomats in Washington to issue a declaration of war be given before the attack began. This was not done and the sneak attack united all Americans. When Yamamotto was informed about the delay in informing the American government, he is known to have told his staff, “I am afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant.” Remember—Pearl Harbor became America’s rallying cry. Today, we are remembering those 2,335 who died December 7, 1941, and we must never forget Pearl Harbor.

The North Broadway Crossings partnered with the Greater Salem Chamber of Commence to offer an old-fashioned visit with Santa Claus. Santa and Mrs claus and Elves arrived on The Salem Patriot antique truck. His visitors had hot cocoa, decorated cookies, while enjoying candy canes and popcorn. Each child recieved a picture with santa and a toy. There were games, crafts face painting for all. The merchant of the crossing and Burington Self stogage made this event possible for the children of Salem, this was the second year thatof what seems to become an annual event .
