Audio systems are increasingly being fed by iPods or direct from iTunes. Portable music devices are popular as they are very convenient and many people use them as their primary source of music. CEDIA members can install iPod docks into walls or provide table top docks, which can be located in convenient location such as by the front door or in the kitchen. When you come home, you can simply dock the iPod and enjoy your music throughout your home. Crestron offer a range of iPod in- wall and table top docking stations. With the simpler system you can switch

between sources in each room (such as the radio and a central iPod) and adjust the volume. With a more sophisticated system, the contents of your iPod including playlists and podcasts are display on in- wall touch panels or wireless controllers. CDs are gradually being replaced by

downloadable mp3 fi les. While many downloads are poor quality, this need not be the case as larger suppliers now provide more and more high quality downloads,

ensuring that the sound quality of a CD is met, if not exceeded. The use of internet radio and streaming services is a growing trend and devices which aggregate content from a variety of media sources and then allow you to access music seamlessly through your whole-home audio system are proving increasingly popular. The great advantage is that once your music is stored or can be accessed electronically, it is easy to fi nd and distribute around the house, complete with metadata, such as, the song playing, the artist, album and cover artwork. The MPS4 from NuVo Technologies,

available from Habitech in the UK (www. habitech.co.uk), aggregates, organises, stores and distributes digital audio content (MP3, M4A, WMA and WAV) whilst making it much easier to enjoy music throughout the house. It auto- synchronises audio content from selected PC’s in the home and brings them into one comprehensive and seamless library. With its internal 320GB hard drive, the

MPS4 can store literally tens of thousands of tracks. It also enables the streaming of

music directly into a home’s audio system from over 100,000 Internet Radio stations through the use of RadioTime and other online services. The unit features four independent stereo RCA audio outputs, allowing it to stream audio content and stored music fi les as up to four sources for NuVo’s Grand Concerto, Renovia or Essentia E6G whole home audio systems. If you are planning any renovation

work to your home, even if it just some redecoration, then consider adding cables. There are many excellent wireless music distribution systems available, however these only send the music to the room. You will still need speakers in the room so you can hear it. The best hidden solutions require speakers to be built into walls, ceilings or cabinetry, and this requires work behind surfaces which will damage existing wallpaper, paint or ceiling surfaces. Fully wired solutions are always more reliable, as wireless signals can be interrupted by people moving around the house, concrete walls, or interference from wireless signals in neighbouring houses.

LEFT: With the CEN- IDOCV users can have full iPod functionality from a whole house audio system via a Crestron touch panel.

BELOW: NuVo’s Music Port (MPS4) bring four versatile sources into a home through one compact unit, installing smoothly and operating fl awlessly as the perfect complement to your whole home audio system.
