Clegg, who has sold more than five million albums, has also been honoured with national and international awards for his outspoken views on apartheid, his perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today.

Known as Le Zulu Blanc (the White Zulu) in France, Clegg has performed all over the world, including Nelson Mandela's 46664 AIDS Awareness concerts.

Randal Arsenault, Dr. Zoo founder and vocalist/guitarist, said both Johnny Clegg and

Graceland have inspired his unique blend of Afro-Celtic- Reggae rhythms.

Growing up in Newfoundland and around Celtic music, Simon's album “blew my mind,” Arsenault said. “This led to my increased interest in Africa and, ultimately, living there, which, in turn, led to an experimentation with fusing African and Celtic music styles,” he explained.

Dr. Zoo — Arsenault selected the name while studying for a doctorate in zoology in South Africa — is a six-piece band that also includes JUNO award-winning Youssou Seck from Senegal (African drums and vocals), Celtic fiddler Roxanne Young (whistles/ vocals), Sudanese guitarist David Kabbashi and Albertans drummer Jim Johnston and bassist Justin Kudding.

Since 2003, the East Coast Music Award-winning group has toured Canada, Japan, the UK, the U.S. and South Africa.

Arsenault said the Dr. Zoo of today would not exist if he had not lived so long in southern Africa.

“When you live there, the music and culture is all around you, seeping into your consciousness,” he said.
