Warm up this winter with some of Africa's most celebrated musicians. Under African Skies
Trying to musically convey a sense of where you've come from can be challenging.
But for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Dr. Zoo and The Johnny Clegg Band, the sights, sounds and sentiments of Africa vibrantly come alive on stage.
Fortunately for us, all three musical acts will perform at Brock University’s Centre for the Arts in the coming months.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo takes to the stage on Feb. 23,
followed by Dr. Zoo, on March 2 and The Johnny Clegg Band, on April 14.
Fans have told Ladysmith Black Mambazo that their live shows make them feel as though they’re in South Africa, said Albert Mazibuko, a group member since 1969.
“This is part of our mission — to share our homeland and culture with people,” he said. “It's funny, when we go to certain places, like Japan, where audiences tend to be
quiet, for us they jump and shout. It always happens... We get a promoter warning us their audiences are, by nature, quiet. But (afterwards) they come to us and say they've never seen their crowds act like they did, jumping and screaming with us. It's wonderful.”
Assembled in the early 1960s, in Durban, South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has released more than 50 recordings and garnered 15 GRAMMY Award nominations and three wins.
