Umpa Lumpa

Leaving Hamptons we headed across into Windsor Arcade – a beautiful traditional arcade full of independent retailers my personal favourites being a traditional greengrocers and the sweet shop Umpa Lumpa – “choc” full of childhood delights including bonbons, fudge, sugar mice, aniseed balls, and possibly the most extensive and colourful pick and mix we’ve ever seen!

Steaming ahead the next stop was Stanwell Road to visit its boutique shops and the Washington Gallery (www.washingtongallery.co.uk) – a two level ar t gallery and café housed in a fantastic ar t deco building which sells a wide range of glassware, ceramics, jewellery, cards and giftware.

Continuing onwards to Station Approach, for present inspiration for budding musicians we visited Pencerdd (www.pencerdd.com) a specialist harp shop which also stocks guitars, violins, strings, reeds and a wide range of sheet music for all instruments. Heading up the road we stopped by Jacken (www.jacken.co.uk) a family run shop selling a wide range of learning and educational toys.

Crossing over to Victoria Street we spotted the Paget Rooms (www.pagetrooms.com) which hosts plays, dances and music concer ts, and where Tom Jones and Shakin’ Stevens have appeared!

The next stop was Hickman Road to ener- chi (www.ener-chi.co.uk) a holistic relaxation, healing, beauty and clinical therapy establishment with an accompanying retail outlet – home to an extensive stock of beauty, aromatherapy and herbal products including Dr Hauschka, L’Occitane, Eminence Organics and the award winning Lulu & Boo. Stepping inside we instantly felt relaxed, thanks to its delicious aroma and calming ambience. Spoilt for choice for present ideas I decided on rather yummy Christmas

It was then time to see for myself why Penar th has earned its unofficial title of “Garden by the sea” so we headed to Alexandra Park which leads from the town to the seafront. The park boasts colourful flowerbeds, stunning topiary displays, ornate bandstand, fishpond, children’s park and aviary. Passing the notable Italian Gardens on the Esplanade with its unusual palm trees and exotic plants we continued to one of the town's most celebrated attractions – it's Pier. Opened in 1895 the pier is one of the last remaining Victorian piers in Wales. Standing at an impressive 658 foot long, it is the perfect place to soak up the view from across Flatholm, Steepholm and the Bristol Channel, whilst enjoying the age old tradition of a “99” with a flake and strawberry sauce! At the entrance to the pier the ar t deco style pavilion proudly
