Performance Feature *Hadban USA (cont’d)

heart passed the test with flying colors. And, while not in the top ten due to the extra 45 minute hold, Hadban finished well within the required maximum time for 50 miles. Now, we just have to figure out how to convince him to not get so excited during com- petition when he sees mares!!

We are currently planning our next two 50 mile competitions in late September in southern Idaho, which we hope to ac- complish back-to-back. Hadban has so far shown himself to be “tough as a Radautzer”, fulfill- ing the promise of his Roma- nian Shagya genetic heritage.

Shagya Skamp AF (Janos/Samantha by *Amurath Samurai) and I com- pleted our first endurance competition in West Virginia over Labor Day weekend. Given our combined inexperience, I only attempted the lim- ited distance (25 miles). Skamp was very calm in camp, motivated on the trail and he ate and drank like a champion!

My only strategy was “don’t get lost”. I trusted Skamp to choose his pace for the most part, only dismounting for steep downhills. I was shocked and delighted to learn that we finished in 5th place!

I was especially proud to think that Janos’ legacy is living on through Skamp. We both had a blast at our first race and look forward to more miles in the future. For more details, photos and videos, please follow my blog at www.tevisorbust. blogspot.com
