Hans-Holger Albrecht President & CEO, Modern Times Group

August 2000. He joined Modern Times Group in 1997 and has served as head of the group’s pay-TV operations and as president of its Viasat Broadcasting arm. Prior to joining MTG, he worked for Daimler-Benz and with the Luxembourg-based CLT media group for five years, where he was responsible for all televi- sion activities and development in Germany and eastern Europe.

Achievements of the year The strengthen- ing of our pay-TV offering in Scandinavia and the Baltics which became possible when the Barclays Premier League rights were up for grabs. We really didn’t expect it, but when it happened we acted and we acted fast. We are now the only pay TV operator in the region, which can offer the Premier League to its sub- scribers in all countries. The other major achievement is that we – in most of our free- TV countries – have been able to increase our market shares, both during and after the financial crisis.

Surprises of 2010 How surprisingly quickly and steeply the advertising market recovered in some of our markets, especially in Sweden.

Goals for next year The continuing develop- ment of our “Entertainment at your com- mand” concept. Our Viasat OnDemand is already available through the on-demand box for our satellite subscribers, via smart phones as Android and iPhone, as well as iPad, con- nected TV – built into LG’s NetCast functionali- ty – and for PC and Mac users of the internet. There is more to come.

Game-changing future development The demand from viewers to watch programming anywhere, anytime. TV listings will be of less importance. Availability will be the key.

Under the leadership of Hans-Holger Albrecht, Modern Times Group (MTG) has prospered through difficult times, based on revenues from both pay and free-to-air TV. This year, MTG’s pay TV offer in Scandinavia and Baltic states was strengthened by the acquisition of English Premier League rights as well as the launch of multi-platform on-demand services, while its free-to-air channels have increased their market share across its territories.
