MAC Triathletes Complete the Ironman

M

AC member Asa McLoughlin joined the MAC Triathlon and Running Committee in 2008 and set a goal that she’d complete a full Ironman Triathlon before she turned 40.

It was also in 2008 that she started training for her first triathlon race, which began with learning how to swim. In joining the Triathlon and Running Committee, McLoughlin found a group of amazing athletes of all levels, both beginners and experienced competitors. Using the support of the committee and the resources of member Coaches Linnea Alvord and Bridget Dawson, McLoughlin started training.

Fast forward two years after completing her first triathlon, McLoughlin reached her goal of completing a full Ironman Triathlon at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in June. “While the race was challenging, I am so happy and thankful that I was able to finish it,” says McLoughlin. “Training for this distance as a full-time working single mom is not an easy task and the support of MAC definitely helped.”

Member athlete Eric Helser also competed in his first Ironman Triathlon this summer at Ironman Canada; it was a goal he set for his 50th birthday. Helser had an incredible debut race, placing ninth in his age group and qualifying for the world championships at Kona. After training for several months on his own, Helser sought the coaching of Alvord and began preparing mentally and physically for the event. With his sights on Canada, Helser joined other MAC members in local triathlons leading up to the race. “Overall, I enjoyed the training,” says

Helser. “I was learning the entire time, but also having a lot of fun. It was great to have the camaraderie of being a part of the MAC team.”

Any members with a goal of competing in their first triathlon or improving on their previous triathlon performances should be sure to check out the MAC Triathlon and Running Committee.

Within two years, MAC member Asa McLoughlin completed her first triathlon and also accomplished her goal of competing in an Ironman Triathlon.

Join the MAC Triathlon and Running

Committee for the annual Peacock Lane Run Wednesday, Dec. 15. This long- standing tradition is a popular event and a great way see the lights of Peacock Lane by foot. Participants meet at the Turnaround at 5:30 p.m. for a 5:45 p.m. departure. The round-trip loop is approximately nine miles, but those who want the shorter option can take MAX there and enjoy the downhill run on the way home. MAC provides food and drinks after the run, so participants should bring a change of clothes.
