MAC Pilates Program Welcomes Participants
T
he Pilates program proudly opened its doors to the MAC membership to showcase the newly expanded and remod- eled basement-level Pilates Studio at the annual Pilates Open House Oct. 13. The studio now features sleek new V2MAX Reformer/Cadillac equipment. This versatile piece of equipment allows members more sports-specific training as well as rehabilitation because it is two machines – both a reformer and Cadillac – in one.
Throughout the day, more than 85 members participated in mini classes on the equipment. Trainers and Pilates Committee members were on hand to answer questions about the variety of Pilates classes and programs offered at MAC, and hourly winners took home Pilates-themed prizes. Many more members peeked in the door to see the equipment in use and to view core strengthening in process. MAC’s Pilates program maintains a library of DVDs that feature Pilates mat workouts. Members may contact Matt Mastrantuono at 503-517-7539 to check out the DVDs for individual use. For more information about MAC Pilates, see the bulletin board outside the Pilates Studio, call the Group Exercise Hotline at 503-525-8980, or contact

Discover the Uses of the Pilates Chair
he Pilates chair, also known as the Wunda chair, is a traditional piece of equipment that Joseph Pilates developed after observing Chinese acrobats learning difficult maneuvers on a box. The chair is designed to flip over and double as furniture. The chair has always been a part of any fully equipped Pilates studio. Lately, the chair is becoming more mainstream. Its use is taught in group classes at gyms and studios, essen- tially losing its status as one of the mysterious Pilates machines. MAC offers a 10-session Pilates chair class Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.- noon. The first class is Tuesday, Jan. 11. The class offers interesting variations on more traditional Pilates exercises. It gives participants more opportunities to work in an upright/ standing position, which is much more functional and true to or everyday life. Participants can expect more stability and flexibility work on the chair as well as improved upper body strength. Class is taught in a small group environment, which allows participants more one- on-one attention. The cost is $240. To register, call Integrative Fitness at 503-517-7539. For program information, call Pilates Coordinator Joanna Pivo at 503-517-7550. WM
