A DM INIST RATIV E Faces in the Club

Anne Goldsmith, CMA, has been involved with Operation Shoebox since 1998. Operation Shoebox, a project of Medical Teams International, provides humanitarian aid to Honduras. This aid includes volunteer medical and dental teams, construction services, and shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene care, and a toy. “When Hurricane Mitch, the deadliest Atlantic hurricane in more than 200 years, wiped out Honduras, I couldn’t turn my back on the people, especially the kids,” Goldsmith says. She has personally made more than 350 shoeboxes for the children of Honduras. In her spare time, she makes presentations to schools, synagogues, church groups, scout troops and businesses, lecturing about Operation Shoebox. Her daughter, Kelly Anne, is also involved with the project.

Zach Abney, a 2010 MAC Scholar Athlete, played quarterback during Parkrose High School’s comeback season. The Broncos finished the 2010 season 4-6; winning Parkrose’s first league game since 1993 and going to the playoffs for the first time since 1982. The season began with 26 players on the varsity team. “All season we played with those 26 guys, and by the end we were a family,” Abney says. “I strongly believe that’s why we were able to have the small success we had.” Abney was named first team all-league quar- terback for the Northwest Oregon conference, and was named to academic all-league while keeping a 3.9 GPA.

Tara Lematta joined the MAC staff in October as the senior executive assistant to General Manager Norm Rich and the Board of Trustees. Lematta replaces Sara Baker, who retires in February 2011. Lematta worked previously for Banfield, The Pet Hospital and Providence Health and Services in administrative, project management, and opera- tions management roles. A former accomplished musician and athlete, Lematta enjoys being a Tom Grant groupie and attending her daughter Cassandra’s varsity sport games and club volley- ball tournaments.

Aaron Paulson was selected as the club’s E&C member of the month for December. At six months of age, Paulson contracted polio, which affected his legs. His doctors believed he would never be able to walk. “My goal was to prove them wrong, but also I wanted to be independent,” Paulson says. “My motivation to work out is the fact that I have been given the gift of life and I cherish each and every day with no excuses for myself.” Paulson works out three times a week in the swim- ming pool, and once a week in the E&C Room. He is setting his sights on possibly attending the 2012 Paralympics swim trials, or someday running the Portland Marathon.

Arthur Whinston is being added to the club’s Gallery of Champions for his first-place finish in the power lift at the World Powerlifting Championship in Las Vegas in November 2006. Whinston competed in the 148-lb. class in the 80-84 age group. He formerly held the world record in the deadlift in masters 75-79, 148-lb. class with 126 lbs. Whinston was a patent and trademark lawyer as a partner in the largest intellectual property law firm in the Northwest. He was a long- distance runner for more than 50 years. Whinston continues his workouts in the E&C Room with his wife, Melicent, and MAC personal trainer Monty Button three times a week.

Melicent Whinston joins her husband, Arthur, in the Gallery of Champions. Melicent finished first in the power lift at the World Powerlifting Championship in Las Vegas, in November 2006. Melicent competed in the 75-79 age group. She holds the Oregon state record in the deadlift with 149 lbs. and bench press with 71 lbs. in the 68-74 age group. She also holds numerous world records. Melicent has competed in track and field in the long jump, 100 meters, shot put, weight throw and super weight throw. Alongside personal trainer Monty Button, Melicent works out three times a week, focusing on cardio, deadlifts, and bench press.
